As the impact of Covid-19 continues to affect people’s lives across the globe, and has a devastating effect on many sectors, with aerospace and aviation particularly affected, the Royal Aeronautical Society’s work to provide support to those affected continues online. Below is an update on our key services during this period. We would also like to thank the frontline personnel, including medical and hospital staff in the NHS and around the world, key workers, carers, volunteers and charity workers for the amazing work they are doing to support the Covid-19 response in such challenging circumstances.
Careers and Employability Support
The Careers team is working from home and is available from 9-5pm Monday-Friday to respond to your emails and calls. Each team member is fully equipped with a work mobile phone and laptop. While we are unable to offer in person 1-2-1 appointment service, we are delighted to confirm this service is still available through web calls and phone by appointment only – please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to book a 1-2-1 session. Remember that our careers service is FREE and open to both members and non-members as part of our charitable activities, and that we understand that many people in the industry have been directly affected by the Covid-19 outbreak and we are here to help.
You can also visit our dedicated Resource section which has lots of guidance materials on making job applications, preparing for interviews and all pages can be downloaded and saved as a pdf to your computer with the click of a button.
We have produced three online resource packs focusing on schools activities, careers and mentoring support and early careers advice which have been widely promoted on social media. These can be found at:
We are planning a series of FREE careers webinars to support those looking to join, or already in, the aerospace and aviation sector with advice and guidance as the crisis develops from the team and industry experts. Check out our event pages for details of forthcoming events and to register your place.
Schools Outreach Programmes
Regretfully, all Cool Aeronautic events are postponed until mid-May at least. This is in light of the need for social distancing measures recommended by the UK Government and the school closure decision announced on 18/03/2020.
However, our online Amy Aviation series for children is available throughout this time via our Amy Aviation partner website Fun Kids Radio which also features supporting education pages and activities. With three series available and designed for children aged 8-12, you can join Amy on her journey to learn how planes fly, how they are made, what pilots do, spaceflight and the history of British Aviation, including the story of female pioneer Amy Johnson who inspired our character. The series are available as free videos on YouTube or as free downloadable audio files from ITunes. Or visit www.funkidslive.com
We are also working on the final stages of our exciting new inclusive engineering STEM Challenge, Falcon2, with the aim of adapting Phase 1 of the programme so that students and teachers can get involved even during the school closures, in keeping with the Challenge theme of accessibility. Look out for news after the Easter holidays.
Alta Mentoring Scheme
Our women to women mentoring platform, Alta, is available throughout this time. The moderation procedures are operating as normal for new users with approvals considered within 24 hours of registration Monday-Friday. With the opportunity to connect online and undergo mentoring sessions through web conference technology there is no better time to get started with your mentoring programme. With recent support for the programme confirmed by GKN Aerospace and Collins Aerospace, along with continued support from the founding partners Airbus, UWE, RAF and Little Blue Private Jets, we will aim to announce new in person networking and speed mentoring events as soon as we can in the early summer.
Careers in Aerospace & Aviation LIVE 2020
Our annual recruitment fair is planned for Friday 6 November 2020 to take place once again at our beautiful headquarters building. Exhibitor registration opens late Spring 2020 but we understand that many of our industry and education partners may be facing a sustained period of uncertainty with regards to recruitment and training. Therefore we will be offering exhibitors a special booking form with a fully refundable 10% deposit with the balance payable nearer to the event date. In the event of a return to current restrictions we will review the event and ensure exhibitors and visitors are informed through regular updates. Please contact email@example.com
End Point Assessment Services for Apprenticeships
The RAeS delivers End Point Assessment services for a number of aerospace and aircraft engineering related apprenticeship standards. We will work closely with our employers and training providers who will be directly affected by the impact of Covid-19 on their businesses. The EPA team members are working from home and equipped with laptops and work mobiles to respond to queries over this period. We are also working with the employers, DfE and its agencies (EFSA and IFSA) to review processes and policies to meet all stakeholder needs and ensure apprentices are not unduly affected. Our office hours during the Covid-19 restrictions are 9-5pm. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for all enquiries.
We can also provide support and guidance for any apprentices in the sector who are worried about their apprenticeship or have been made redundant, through the Careers team.
Our dedicated Twitter account, @RAeSCareers will continue to run and please do check in with us for news on our activities and those of partners in the industry.
