Aviation directly contributes at least £22 billion to the UK economy and is estimated to directly provide over 230,000 jobs, and consists of around  4,500 businesses. The industry is growing at a rapid rate to meet rising demand. Government forecasts show that the demand for aviation will  continue to rise significantly and annual UK passenger numbers are likely to increase to 435 million by 2020. The government supports the growth of aviation and the benefits this would deliver, particularly for the next generation. GREEN AVIATION

The world is turning green,” commented Mike Stewart, VP, Advanced Technology, Honeywell Aerospace. Recent years have seen an increased focus on environmental issues, in particular the effect that rising levels of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere has on global warming. Recent years have seen a revolution in aircraft propulsion systems with hybrid-electric and battery-powered electric aircraft now becoming an economically viable alternative to conventional platforms – at least for smaller, short range aircraft.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Diversity is an important topic on the agenda within the industry. There are now around 20% of females in technical roles which is similar to the university output. This shows that things are improving and the trend is positive. Attracting and recruiting a more diverse workforce is only half the story, in order to inspire the next generation, including underrepresented groups, to consider careers in aviation, they need to be able to see careers available where they are able to thrive.
