Cool Aeronautics is BACK!

Cool Aeronautics is an outreach program that targets primary school children. The idea is that The RAeS careers team can help to run the event but we also encourage our branches and volunteers to run them with our help. The day will consist of professional speakers telling the children about their careers and why they love it! They then move on to take part in some STEM or Aero related tasks and leave the day with a goodie bag and a ton of inspiration for their future careers. We want to inform and inspire children that didn’t know that aerospace and aviation careers where something they could aspire too!

Over the last 2 years the RAeS Careers Team have had to stop physical events due to the pandemic and the rules this has enforced with visiting schools. There have been some virtual events which has meant we could still reach hundreds of children over the country but we couldn’t wait to get back to it.

The first physical Cool Aeronautics of 2022 took place on the 25th March at Stansted Airport Aerozone. They have a dedicated flight viewing platform and lots of staff willing to speak with students about what they do and why it is important in the running of the airport. On our First event we got lucky and were joined by the Airport Fire Service, The Essex police service, Environmental officer and the Aircraft operations team. This is a lot of speakers for but we are so grateful that they were able to inform the students the variety of roles in the industry.

We had some aspiring pilots and firefighters and many or them were interested in the biodiversity and environmental factors surrounding the airport including the endangered newts and birds.

We have now also delivered our second Cool Aeronautics at the University of Sheffield  where the students have arranged speakers such as Dr John Holding and put together activities to teach the children things about aerospace engineering such as lift and aerodynamics. They even got to have a goo on flight simulators!

There are already more booked in with the next one at East Midlands Airport Aerozone. Others in the year will include venues such as out very own 4 Hamilton place, Manchester Airport Aerozone and Farnborough. If you are a teacher or education provider, look out for emails too book in when future dates are added.
