World Skills UK 2021 – Aero Engineering – Mechanical Competition Results

The Royal Aeronautical Society was delighted to become one of the competition organising partners of the Worldskills UK Competition for Aeronautical Engineering – Mechanical 2021. This competition celebrates aircraft engineering skills with apprentices from across the UK taking part in a three stage competition which culminated in the national finals held at HMS Sultan from Wednesday 17th – Friday 19th November.

We welcomed 8 competitors from across the UK who were tasked with a set of real-life aircraft engineering challenges over the two days in order to determine this year’s winner and potential entrants for the International team travelling to China next year for World Skills International. All the challenges were based on hands-on exercises that involve real scenarios that an aircraft engineer would face. Tasks involved repairing damage to an aircraft body through sheet metal repair, creating and operating a hydraulic actuator, a full, detailed inspection on a Lynx rotorcraft and replacing a rotor blade on a propellor. After two exciting days the competition came to a close and our three medallists for 2021 were chosen.

WSUK Finalist 2021

We would like to congratulate this year’s competition winner and gold medallist, Jeremy Franks (pictured right) who is currently training with Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. Jeremy’s natural ability to identify faults and stay focused on every task was a testament to his win. We would also like to congratulate Colleg Cambria apprentices Matthew Cutt who won Silver and Adele Hughes who won Bronze. We look forward to following their journey as they continue the process for squad selection for the Worldskills International Final!

RAeS is extremely grateful to HMS Sultan who kindly allowed us to use their training facility in order to host the competition. We would also like to thank Leonardo Helicopters for their technical lead and the fantastic team of volunteer judges who supported the finals. This was a particularly challenging year due to the pandemic which meant a whole new format had to be developed and our congratulations to all those who took part. W

e look forward to working with WorldSkills in the future to welcome the next generation of aircraft engineers to the competition!
