9:30 – 17:30

The RAeS Young Professionals Conference is back with a programme entirely for early career professionals, students and apprentices, providing a platform to learn, discuss and network.

We have a fantastic programme lined up, with industry speakers covering a range of exciting subjects. This year we are looking at Journeys in Aerospace and Aviation, the changes we can expect in air travel, novel innovations being developed, and the journeys of the professionals that make up the industry. This year we have added a panel discussion on Journeys through Aerospace, where our speakers and members of the YPN will discuss and share their experiences of building careers and give advice to young professionals starting out.

Below is the programme confirmed so far:

The Future of Aerospace – Sir Brian Burridge FRAeS, CEO, Royal Aeronautical Society
There are clearly some future trends that will undoubtedly affect the aerospace and aviation sectors in years to come such as passenger growth, climate change and shifts in global economic power. Perhaps more a compelling aspect is the inexorable march of science and technology, now encapsulated in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Sir Brian will look at the global backdrop against which these novel technologies will operate, assess the chances of success in some of the more advanced propositions and consider what it will all mean to the future human dimension in our sectors.

Pioneering Human Flight – Dr Angelo Grubišić MRAeS, Gravity Industries & University of Southampton
Dr. Grubisic is a developer of human flight systems including jetsuits and wingsuits. He is the Head of Flight Training and a jetsuit pilot for Gravity Industries, and also a wingsuit BASE jumper and Lecturer of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton. He is a specialist in space and air breathing propulsion systems and has worked extensively on the development and testing of advanced spacecraft propulsion systems, including on the NSTAR ion thruster at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the T6 Gridded Ion Thruster with QinetiQ.

Life in the UK Space Industry – Shahida Barick FRAeS, Director UK, SSC Space UK
The UK space industry is presently worth over £13Bn per annum, employing some of the highest skilled professionals in the country and the world. It’s a sector that allows mobility, pays well and is working tirelessly with government agencies, our military, academia and other sectors of industry to continue to promote the best of UK Plc. Shahida is a spacecraft engineer with over two decades of experience in commercial, military, navigation and exploratory space programmes.

Sponsor Presentation – Willis Asset Management
An insight into the growth profile of the global civil aviation sector including aircraft order books and engine type selection. We will also discuss the commercial and financial aspects of engine management, a critical knowledge gap for many in the industry and one that many companies within the industry come to rely on.

Panel Discussion: Journeys in Aerospace & Aviation
Our speakers will be joined by members of the YPN to discuss their journeys and experiences in building a career in the industry, the pathways they took, challenges they faced and overcame and further training. Delegates will be able to join the discussion and panel members will give their advice for young aerospace professionals starting out today. Speakers will be joined by YPN members Sophie Harker (BAE Systems), Kiran Ramsaroop (BAE Systems) and James Hamilton (Airbus).
