We encourage innovative design: an example is the European Student Competition on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (ESCO-UAS) in which teams of students from different universities compete to design, build and fly an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle. The increasing number of defence and civil market applications for UAVs bring together traditional aerospace technologies with advanced materials and micro/nano technology. Our aerospace laboratory facilities have been highly rated by our students and include wind tunnels with capabilities up to Mach 4, flight simulators, and industry-standard software. Our rocketry laboratory includes the only rocket motor test cell in a UK university and our staff are undertaking pioneering work on rocket propulsion systems: see rockets.herts.ac.uk
Our aerospace staff have a wealth of industrial experience which gives an applied approach to their teaching and their contacts prove invaluable to our graduates seeking employment. The University offers a suite of aerospace courses to suit your individual career aspirations. Modules are studied in common in the early stages allowing you the opportunity to transfer between the courses before you specialise. All our courses include pilot training, either as part of the course or as optional extra study with one to one instruction at a nationally recognised flight centre. This will help you to appreciate aircraft flying characteristics and will form the basis for some of your advanced theoretical studies. It may also be used towards gaining a Private Pilot’s Licence.

We aim to help our students to develop the skills and understanding that will allow them to build a successful career. A range of teaching methods are used including problem-based-learning, traditional lectures, laboratories, modern computer simulations, design-build-test exercises and individual projects. Our aim is that each module will have a significant amount of active learning. The main aerospace topics of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, avionics, aerostructures and materials are all taught by staff who undertake leading research in their field. A design project later in the degree provides experience in integrating these topics into a flying prototype. Teaching at Liverpool is supported by the newly built active learning laboratory, flight simulators, computers and wind tunnels.
Our emphasis on active learning throughout our taught programmes is captured in our 'Liverpool Engineer' moto, 'To simulate the active learning of sound engineering principles and practices within an environment which fosters creativity, innovation and professionalism' The Liverpool Engineer is a phrase intended to encapsulate the special nature of a graduate from any of the programmes offered by the Department of Engineering - an engineering education distinctive in the way students engage activity, through design and make, with their learning process.
