Meeting People and Networking
Although it may be tempting to rely on websites to access information about relevant companies and job vacancies, meeting recruiters and networking with aerospace professionals will vastly increase your chances of finding the right job.
Air Shows and Trade Fairs
There are many aerospace ‘business to business’ events each year in which aerospace companies unite under one roof (or hangar!) to promote their products, woo clients and discuss business partnerships and future projects.
Although not usually directly used to recruit, more and more events such as Farnborough International and RIAT are used to promote aerospace as the career sector of choice, and some companies may even advertise job openings at the event.
At these kinds of events, you may find the smaller company stands particularly useful with the chance to talk directly to senior staff at the company who may be able to advise on entry routes etc. Also look out for special career zones at the events which may take place in either a particular area of the event, or on a particular day.
At graduate fairs, as ‘generic’ careers events, there will be a range of employers, but it is always worth checking out the event websites to find out if any aerospace-related companies will be exhibiting. Most are free to attend and some organisers will contribute to your travel costs, so even if only one or two companies exhibiting are in your field of interest it is always worth attending to collect useful information about their selection process.
